Pupils from Larmenier and Sacred Heart Catholic Primary School were given a special tour of the Town Hall last week (Wednesday October 15).

As part of their visit, pupils held their school council meeting in the main council chamber. They also met, Cllr Antony Lillis, cabinet member for community and children’s services, who explained how the council works.

That was followed by a quiz on local democracy and a visit to the Mayor’s Parlour. The visit was part of Local Democracy Week, which aims to make councils more relevant to young people.

Cllr Lillis, said: “It was a real pleasure to meet the pupils of Larmenier and Sacred Heart and I hope that they enjoyed the visit as much as I did. It is vital that young people understand democracy and local government and visits like this are an excellent way to explain how it works to them."

In another Local Democracy Week event, around 20 young people from the borough’s youth groups visited the Town Hall later on in the day for a youth question time event. The teenagers attended workshop sessions on different subjects relevant to young people, including health, environmental issues and education.

The workshops were followed by a question and answer session where Cllr Lillis was grilled on all matters associated with council life.
