A giant mural, created by a world-famous artist, has been restored to its former glory and is now back on display at New King’s School, Fulham, following an absence of almost 20 years.
The ‘Magic Garden’ was created by the artist Francis Carr and first unveiled in the school in 1961 to much critical acclaim.
Unfortunately, over the years, the mural fell into a state of disrepair and was boarded up in the 1980s.
But to the rescue came Francis Carr who returned to the school during the summer holidays and restored the mural together with a crack team of fellow artists.
Now the 20 feet tall piece of art is looking back to its best. Year two pupils are now making their own mosaics inspired by the mural which was created to help children to read and write.
New Headteacher, Miles Chester, said: “The restored mural really looks fantastic and on behalf of pupils, staff and parents here, I would like to thank Francis Carr for giving up his own time and restoring it.”
Mr Chester only joined the school at the start of term after serving as Deputy Head at Sunny Hill Primary School in Streatham for the past four years.
He added: “I am really excited to be here and am looking forward to working with pupils and the community as a whole over the coming years. New King’s is a wonderful school and I feel privileged to be the new head teacher.”
The mural restoration has been overseen by The Twentieth Century Society and funded by The Heritage of London Trust.
