Cllr Mark Loveday, cabinet member for strategy, said: "On behalf of everyone in Hammersmith and Fulham I would like to congratulate James DeGale for his exceptional performance in Beijing. This Hammersmith boy born and bred is a true inspiration to us all and his gold medal shows what can be achieved with dedication and hard work.
"The borough is proud to have a gold medallist and I am sure that James will prove to be an excellent role model for the thousands of young people in Hammersmith & Fulham who aspire to sporting success."
To celebrate London becoming the official Olympic Games host city, a special handover flag was raised at Fulham Palace last Sunday (August 24).
Cllr Mark Loveday performed the ceremony together with Peter Trott of the Fulham Palace Museum.
A first in the history of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, the iconic London Olympic Handover Flag was raised simultaneously across the UK.
