International sports stars and an Olympic medallist will be touring Hammersmith and Fulham in a bid to encourage youngsters to take up sport.

Hammersmith & Fulham Council has joined forces with national initiative, Sporting Champions, which brings world-class athletes face-to-face with young people to inspire and motivate them.

English international footballer Lianne Sanderson, 200m and 400m sprinter Lesley Owusu and 400m Olympic silver medallist Mark Richardson will be attending three community sports events across the borough in August and September.

Councillor Antony Lillis, council cabinet member for children’s services, said: "These talented athletes are excellent role models for this borough’s youngsters. They have shown what determination, dedication and hard work can achieve and we hope that Lianne, Lesley and Mark can inspire many more champions of the future."

Lianne will be at the children’s health and sports Urban Arena event at the Linford Christie Stadium on Friday 22nd August, from 3pm – 5pm.

Mark Richardson will be attending the Summer Festival of Sport at Linford Chirstie Stadium – a fun-filled family day of activities celebrating the centenary of the 1908 Olympics in White City. This is being held on Sunday 31st August, from 11am until 3.30pm.

The day will comprise free sports and fun-packed activities for all the family in celebration of the centenary of the 1908 White City Olympics.

The site has been chosen as a London 2012 Olympic training venue and all the clubs that use it as their base will be holding training sessions and competitions as a taster of their annual programmes.

These clubs include: London Nigerian Rugby Club, Chiswick Hockey Club, Thames Valley Harriers, Queens Park Rangers and Chelsea Football Club.

The Linford Christie Outdoor Sports Centre can be found on Artillery Way (off Du Cane Road), Wormwood Scrubs, W12.

Lesley will be joining in the celebrations at H&F Celebrate 2008 at Lyric Square on Wednesday 17th September from 12pm until 3pm. This will mark the handover of the Paralympics from Beijing to London, for the 2012 games, which happens at 2.30pm. Disability sport and dance organisations will also be promoting disability sports in the borough, telling people how they can get involved.
