COUNCIL leaders are this week issuing a challenge to residents across the borough – YOU decide the future of the western extension congestion charging zone.
The £123 million scheme was launched in the face of major public opposition in February last year.
Londoners will decide whether the zone – which was extended to cover parts of Kensington and Chelseaand Westminster– should continue or be altered.
H&F Council Leader Councillor Stephen Greenhalgh said: “Our motto is putting residents first and that is exactly what we are doing on this issue. We want residents to tell us whether the zone should be kept, scrapped or altered. Yes, as a council we have our own views and we have grave concerns about whether the extension if working. But we will be listening and acting on the feedback from residents. You will help decide the extension’s future.”
This week, the council newspaper, H&F News, has launched a poll to canvas your views on our website. The Council will also plans to hold a public meeting as part of the Mayor of London’s consultation in September.
The consultation will be open to residents, businesses and stakeholders across the capitalbut the Mayor of London has said he "particularly" wanted to hear from those living inside the western zone and around its borders. If the consultation reveals that Londoners want to scrap the scheme it could be dismantled by the end of next year.
The West London Residents' Association, which fought against the western extension, with Hammersmith & Fulham and Kensington & Chelsea councils, has said it will campaign for the scheme to go.
After the consultation, Transport for Londonwill produce a report for the Mayor, who will make a final decision on the scheme. Consultation details – including how to obtain response forms – are available at www.tfl.gov.uk
