Work closes Hammersmith Bridge Road

Friday November 8, 2013

Hammersmith Bridge Road will be closed in sections over four nights next week for essential road works.

Between November 11 and 15, 9pm-5am, the carriageway will be resurfaced and, in the spirit of joined up working, repairs will be carried out to Hammersmith Bridge at the same time.

The work, carried out by Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s contractor Colas, is set to last for four nights but some of the work may need to be extended if the weather is poor. To reduce disruption this work has been planned at night in sections.

On Monday November 11, there will be a full overnight closure of Hammersmith Bridge Road in both directions. The bridge will be open for access to Rutland Grove residents only in both south and north bound directions.

From November 12 to 15, Hammersmith Bridge Road will be closed southbound on the approach to Hammersmith Bridge. The road, including the bridge, will be open northbound but traffic will have to turn west onto Great West Road to the Hogarth roundabout in Chiswick.

All other through-traffic approaching from Hammersmith Broadway will be diverted westbound over the flyover or down King Street.

During the work traffic will be diverted at night only. Diversions will be in place locally and via Putney Bridge and Chiswick Bridge. Advance warning signs and variable message signs will be put up in the area giving information of the restrictions and diversions.

Residents and visitors should be aware that:
- Access to Rutland Grove, Bridge View and Lower Mall will ONLY be via Hammersmith Bridge (northbound), coming into the borough from Castelnau
- Access to Weltje Road, Upper Mall and Oil Mill Lane will ONLY be via Hammersmith Flyover and Great West Road (westbound).

Access will be maintained for emergency services, cyclists and pedestrians at night and access during the daytime will be as normal.

Cllr Victoria Brocklebank-Fowler, Hammersmith & Fulham Council’s cabinet member for transport and technical services, said: “These works are simply unavoidable and must be done now, to make sure the road surface holds up for the next decade. Of course, if there was any way we could keep the road open then we would.

“We are doing everything we can to keep disruption to residents to a minimum and we apologise for any temporary disruption this may cause.”

Buses travelling via Hammersmith Bridge, including routes 33, 72, 283 and 209, will be diverted from 9pm but will continue to follow their normal routes on the Richmond side of Hammersmith Bridge.

To minimise disruption and maintain safety, all work will be carried out at night only. The noisiest work will be carried out in the early evening and all noise will be kept to a minimum. No vehicles will be allowed to park or wait in the work area, as vehicles causing an obstruction can hold up the works and emergency services.

For more information on the works contact the council on 020 8753 3074 or 020 8753 2402, speak to Michael Mackey at Colas on 07768 793 550 or the on-site supervisor, Chris Burkett on 07785 612920. Alternatively the duty officer is available after hours on 020 8748 8588.

Would it be possible to know for how long the hammersmith brdge will be closed next summer 2016 please?

Reply from the council: Hi Monica, sorry we don't yet know exactly when or for how long work will be needed on the bridge, but will give everyone as much advance notice as we can.

Clicked on this story to learn about CURRENT closures to Hammersmith Bridge, but can only see information about closures during last November.
Not so much a newsletter, more a local history letter.
Can you do better? 18 Jan 2014
