Get HF Moving – what you have been saying
Monday July 4, 2011
Since February, the council has received hundreds of comments about transport from people who live or work in Hammersmith & Fulham, and from commuters who travel through the borough.
Transport officers have been analysing these comments and recurring themes from residents include calls to cut congestion and traffic jams on the borough’s roads and create better access for cyclists. The main five topics that have attracted the most attention from people are:
- traffic on Fulham Palace Road
- parking for residents and visitors, and parking on football match days
- the impact of road works
- the junction with North End Road and Talgarth Road
- transport in the south Fulham riverside area.
On June 20, the council agreed to adopt a £2m plan to improve transport in H&F. The local implementation plan (LIP), which Transport for London has also approved, sets out transport targets for the next 20 years. The priorities listed in the plan are:
- Serve the five major regeneration areas in the borough – White City, North Fulham area, South Fulham Riverside, Hammersmith Town Centre and Old Oak Common
- Improve the efficiency of our road network
- Improve the quality of our streets
- Improve air quality in the borough
- Support residents and businesses by controlling parking spaces fairly
- Reduce the number of people injured and killed on our streets.
We have had many comments from residents visiting our website. You have been telling us what you think and now it is our chance to tell you what we are doing to make changes for the better, across the borough.

“There need to be more cycle stands in Jerdan Place as it’s always fun.”
The council's reply:
We are currently carrying out suitability assessments for more cycle stands and work is scheduled to begin in August. The areas being looked at are around Vanston Place, Jerdan Place and Farm Lane, as well as St Peters Square, Orbain Road, North End Road, Star Road, Greswell Street, Castletown Road and Brackenbury Road.

“There need to be better cycling routes around the [Hammersmith] gyratory, as I think people are put off cycling there.
The council's reply:
Alongside the flagship slip road scheme on Fulham Palace Road that will free up congestion around the gyratory, we are working closley with TfL to design Barclays Cycle Superhighway 9. The route is still being worked up but it will start in Hounslow, pass through the borough and end at Hyde Park. The plans will be finalised over the next year with construction expected to begin after the London 2012 games.

“For vehicles heading east on Goldhawk Road and wishing to turn right into the north end of Hammersmith Grove, the traffic lights have a right filter arrow. While this is lit it is not safe for pedestrians to cross the end of Hammersmith Grove. However, at the same time, vehicles heading north on Hammersmith Grove and wishing to turn left into Goldhawk Road are held at a red light. A left filter arrow would allow these vehicles to proceed but not inconvenience pedestrians further.”
The council's reply:
The developer building new flats at the site of the former petrol station on the corner of Goldhawk Road and Hammersmith Grove are funding improvements to this junction. As part of the H&F transport plan for 2011–2031, the council will make a submission to TfL to fund a major overhaul of the entire length of Goldhawk Road in the coming years.

“Is there any consideration in the Fulham Palace Road Plan to put in a green, right turn arrow northbound onto Lillie Road. Buses and cars get completely jammed here, resulting in a back up down Fulham Palace Road.”
The council's reply:
There are two projects on Fulham Palace Road - the slip road project and the ‘corridor’ project.
The corridor project is looking at the rest of Fulham Palace Road from the slip road (at the top of the road) and all the way down to Wandsworth Bridge. The project has a budget of £1million and the aim is to improve the performance and safety of the route. We have identified the junction of Lillie Road as a key junction and are already investigating how it can be improved.

“Please allow motorbikes in all bus lanes, as per the red route trial by the Mayor of London. This will not only ease congestion, but is also safer.”
The council's reply:
We are now two years into our own three year long trial to allow motorbikes in bus lanes on Uxbridge Road and Fulham Palace Road. Once our trial has finished and the results of the Mayor of London’s extended trials are published, we will then make a decision on whether the trial should become permanent. As part of out ten point driver’s charter, we are currently reviewing all our bus lanes, in a bid to improve traffic flow.
