Tall order for amputees
Monday June 21, 2010
Scaling the dizzy heights of Mount Kilimanjaro would be daunting enough for anyone, but when you're an amputee the challenge is far greater.
Charing Cross Hospital-based amputee physiotherapist Laura Burgess and intrepid patient Terry Leeson will join 25 climbers, four of whom are amputees, to ascend the 5,895-metre equatorial volcano in Tanzania in September.
The 10-day challenge, beginning on September 7, will aim to raise £4,000 per person for charities supporting civilian amputees.
Laura is also helping amputee patients to make a splash at a new Hammersmith swimming group.
Charing Cross is running free weekly swimming tuition for patients with lower limb amputations as part of their rehabilitation at the Charing Cross Sports Club, Aspenlea Road.
The group gives patients the chance to socialise and improve their fitness. For details call 020 8741 3654 or visit: www. ccsclub. co. uk
