Students raise money for Haiti victims

Wednesday February 10, 2010

Channel 4 news reader Krishnan Guru Murthy visited Burlington Danes Academy last week after students raised over £2,000 in a fortnight for victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

The money was raised at events including a staff versus sixth form football match and a “colours of Haiti flag day”, when students and staff paid to dress in Haiti’s national colours.

Krishnan took time out of his busy schedule to help a Year 10 class write a news report on the disaster, as part of Teach First week, where professionals go into schools across the country to teach a lesson.

Pupil Nishat Ahmed said: “Having a famous newsreader in front of us made us work even harder in preparing our reports.  He taught us how to stay calm and focused when investigating a very traumatic event, such as the Haiti earthquake.”
