Sainsburys fined

Tuesday February 2, 2010

Sainsbury’s on Fulham Palace Road has been ordered to pay over £3,500 for repeatedly leaving a massive wheelie bin in the road.

The ‘Local Shop’ branch of Sainsbury’s obstructed the road with the bin throughout the first half of 2009.

Officers from the council’s street scene enforcement team were alerted to the problem and took the supermarket giant to court.

At West London Magistrates' Court earlier today, (Tuesday February 2) Sainsbury’s pleaded guilty to obstructing the highways and were fined £1,300 and ordered to pay costs of £2,380.

Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for crime and street scene, said: “The council is committed to keeping its streets as clean and tidy as possible. Residents tell us time and time again how highly they value clean streets and we work round the clock in order to ensure that they are maintained to the very highest of standards. It does not matter how big you are, if you do not share these values, we will have no hesitation in pursuing you all the way to the courts.”

In a separate case, Forest the Bakery on Uxbridge Road, Shepherds Bush, are £1,540 worse off after pleading guilty to fly tipping offences. The bakery had a nasty illegal habit of putting their waste in orange recycling Smart Sacks and ditching the bags on the pavement.

At West London Magistrates' Court, also on Tuesday February 2, Forest the Bakery were fined £400 and told to pay costs of £1,140.
