Recycling is easy
Monday March 22, 2010
The Council is making it much easier for people who live above shops to recycle.
From April 1, residents who live above shops will be receiving flat packs of orange Smart Sacks straight through their letter boxes, every three months.
Previously, these residents had to go to their nearest library to pick up Smart Sacks. This was because rolls of Smart Sacks did not fit through letterboxes and tended to go missing if left on doorsteps.
Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for crime and street scene, said: “Recycling is a duty, not a choice and now we are making it even easier for people who live above flats to get into the habit. If we were able to recycle twice as much as we currently do, it would save the council a staggering £2m a year in landfill charges. That is the equivalent of almost three per cent of all the council tax due to be collected in the next year! So the more you recycle, the easier it is for us to keep your council tax bills as low as possible.”
It couldn’t be simpler for you to recycle. All you have to do is leave your recycling out on the same day that you have your waste collected.
Please put your refuse and recycling out for collection either after 9pm on the evening before your collection day, or before 6am on your collection day. Refuse and recycling should be put outside your property where it is clearly visible. Smart Sacks should be securely tied and large cardboard boxes flattened and left in a neat bundle next to the Smart Sacks.
What can you recycle with the council?
You can put the following in the borough's Smart recycling banks or orange sacks:

- Plastic bottles (please remove lids from plastic bottles and squash them if possible)
