Putney Bridge Station clean

Monday November 23, 2009

Approaches to Putney Bridge tube station have been given a thorough clean as the council continues to spruce up the borough.

In response to complaints from residents and commuters, workers from the council’s waste contractors, Serco, have removed all litter from areas around the station, including the alleyway that cuts through to New King's Road.

Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for crime and street scene, said: “According to the Tidy Britain Group, 93 per cent of streets in H&F are cleaner that the national standard. However, we do accept that some streets fall below an acceptable level and we are pulling out all of the stops to bring them up to scratch as a matter of urgency. The work at Putney Bridge is an excellent example of that commitment.”

In a separate development, a pioneering agreement to speed up the removal of graffiti and rubbish from around the borough’s stations and railway lines has been struck between the council and Network Rail.

The agreement will lead to a better working relationship between the council and Network Rail to enable a quicker response to Londoners’ complaints about litter and graffiti on land around the railways.

The council and Network Rail have agreed to:

  • better coordinate their cleaning schedules in areas in and around stations and railway lines
  • work together to seek long term solutions to preventing people from dumping rubbish or daubing station buildings with graffiti
  • set time limits for removing graffiti or cleaning rubbish from sites from when a complaint is received
  • educate people about the dangers and penalties of this type of antisocial behaviour
