Plan for disruption on August 14 2011

Wednesday June 8, 2011

An 87 mile long international cycling race that will pass through Fulham on Sunday August 14 2011 will bring huge disruption to the south of the borough.

Residents are being advised not to travel by vehicle in Fulham throughout the day and to plan your day now to minimise the impact of the race.

Around 150 international cyclists will be riding down Fulham Road shortly after 9am as part of the London-Surrey Cycle Classic. The race starts at Hyde Park and takes in a number of London boroughs as well as Surrey. This event follows the same course as the Olympic Cycle Road Race, which will take place on July 28 and 29, during next year's Olympic Games. The cyclists will be riding back through Fulham later in the day.

The event is managed by the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games (LOCOG). Transport for London (TfL) are also working on a plan to manage traffic on the day.

Cllr Nick Botterill, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "Residents need to know that this event will bring the south of the borough to a standstill on Sunday August 14. It will be almost impossible to drive in Fulham during the day and we are urging residents to plan their day now in order to minimise disruption.

“If you are going to the airport to catch a flight or main line stations to catch a train on that day, or have some other appointment you must get to it is absolutely crucial that you add plenty of time onto your journey. The council has met with TfL and LOCOG on numerous occasions and has requested that everything is done to protect the interests of residents. Sunday August 14 is going to be a difficult day for Fulham people and if you do not take this event into account you will certainly be caught up in significant disruption."

Hammersmith & Fulham Council is still waiting to hear firm details from LOCOG and TfL but at the moment we know that:

- The entire length of Fulham Road, Fulham High Street and Putney Bridge Approach will be closed for a minimum of eight hours, potentially from 5am on Sunday August 14.

- The whole of the Circle Line is expected to be closed. The District Line will be closed between Earls Court and Edgware Road and the Hammersmith & City Line between Baker Street and Hammersmith. The Central Line and the rest of the District Line will be working as normal, as will the Picadilly Line. Bus diversions will also be in place. The council has called on TfL to keep as many lines as possible open.

- Motorists are also being warned that they will not be able to park their vehicles on Fulham Road, Fulham High Street or Putney Bridge Approach on August 14. The Council and TfL will provide further details in the near future.

- Vehicles will only be able to cross Fulham Road via Munster Road during certain parts of the day.

- There will be a number of pedestrian crossing points along the route.

TfL has written to residents and businesses already and will be writing again with further details in the coming weeks.
