Parks plans unveiled

Monday January 25, 2010

Designs that will breathe fresh life into eight of the borough’s parks have been unveiled by the council.

During the past few months, children, friends groups and parks visitors have been busy telling the council exactly what new play features they would like to see in their favourite parks and open spaces.

The council has listened intently to their thoughts and has now revealed design plans for Marcus Garvey Park, Hurlingham Park, Cathnor Park, Brook Green, Margravine Gardens, Hammersmith Park, Old Oak Common, Arthur Henderson House and Pelham House in the Lytton Estate and Ravenscourt Park.

The Ravenscourt Park plans include play equipment tailored specifically for disabled children, such as a climbing forest with a low net, a wide slide and a cradle-nest swing.

Over £1m has been earmarked by the council to spend on natural and adventurous play equipment over the next two years, embracing natural features such as grassy mounds, sand and climbing boulders to give children more natural opportunities to play freely and creatively.

The new plans incorporate hills to climb up and roll down, interesting pathways to follow, logs to balance on, climbimg towers, nets and much more.

Cllr Paul Bristow, cabinet member for residents’ services, said: "We have been talking to people for several months, trying to find out exactly what they want from their parks. I am sure that they will be impressed when all the work is complete. Fun and exciting opportunities to play are at the heart of a happy, healthy and enjoyable childhood so the council is delighted to unveil these design plans."

Work will begin in March and all of the play areas are expected to be ready for use in time for the summer.

If you want to get involved in proposing a site for the second year of the project, the council is requesting suggestions of where residents would like to see new play areas developed in Hammersmith and Fulham. This can be in an existing park, open space, school playground (if the school is willing to open up to the public) or housing estate. Suggestions need to include the name and address of the proposed site and need to be submitted by February 28th via email to parks@lbhf.gov.uk
