Nominate an Olympic torchbearer

Thursday June 9, 2011

Do you know someone truly inspirational? Someone who deserves to be at the heart of the greatest show on earth?

If so, this is your chance to give them their moment to shine by nominating them to be a London 2012 Olympic torchbearer.

Olympic organisers LOCOG are searching for 8,000 torchbearers to carry the Olympic Flame across London and the rest of the UK.

Go to www.london2012.com/olympictorchrelay (opens new window) to make your nomination. The deadline for making nominations is 11.59pm on Wednesday 29 June 2011.

Young people in particular from across the capital are encouraged to get involved, with half of the total number of torchbearer places expected to go to people aged between 12 and 24 years of age who are considered leading lights in their local communities.

From the start point of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay at Land’s End, an average of 110 people a day will take centre stage by carrying the Olympic Flame during its 70 day journey towards the Olympic Stadium in London.

The Olympic Flame will travel for approximately 12 hours each day, concluding each day it travels around London with an exciting early evening celebration event that will enable thousands of people each evening to enjoy a variety of entertainment and shows.

Sebastian Coe, Chair of LOCOG said: “The Olympic Flame will shine a light right across the host city in the final week of the Olympic Torch Relay and I hope people right across London start to think about rewarding someone truly inspirational and give someone they know who has gone beyond their personal best, their moment to shine by nominating them to carry the Olympic Flame.”

Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for resident’s services, said: “This truly is a once in a lifetime opportunity to play a major part in the biggest sporting event in the world. We are calling on residents to nominate people whose personal stories will inspire millions, from their local community to those watching around the world.”

A prototype of the torch that will be used has just been unveiled by LOCOG. Designed by Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby, the torch’s triangular, gold-coloured form is perforated by 8,000 circles representing the 8,000 torchbearers and their stories of personal achievement and contribution to their local community.
