New community hub opens on Edward Woods Estate

Monday January 23, 2012

A brand new, state-of-the-art community hub is set to open on the Edward Woods Estate later this year.

Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) Council has spent £665,000 transforming formerly derelict pram sheds into office space so that they can be used by a number of the borough’s voluntary groups, charities and not-for-profit organisations.

The community hub will be split between the ground floors of the Edward Woods blocks of Stebbing, Norland, Poynter and Boxmoor Houses, with the Boxmoor facility likely to be used as the main base for the hub.

Cllr Joe Carlebach, cabinet member for community care, said: “Hammersmith & Fulham has a vibrant and thriving voluntary sector and we have protected these vital organisations and services despite the severe budget pressures that we face.

“This new hub will help us to provide better, more modern facilities for our voluntary organisations and we have been working closely with them to ensure their needs are met. I am sure that all of the groups who take up the opportunity will be very pleased with their new home and we will be working hard to make sure that local residents reap the benefits of this fantastic deal.”

Organisations will be moving into the hub in a phased manner from early 2012 with a launch event planned for later in the year.

Organisations interested in renting space at the hub will be asked to complete an application process which has been developed, with priority given to those that meet local priorities, including delivering services that benefit local residents and contribute to the community hub ethos.

It has been a very difficult move. however, we thank Cllr Carlebach and all LBHF officers who have made the time to pay us and the other few re-located voluntary organisations a visit. Sadly, my organisation only solution was to find other alternative premises, which we shall be moving to mid-Feb and hoping to have your full support in making this move possible in order to maintain the vital service we provide, without any further interruption.

@Marquart
The council would like to apologise for the teething problems that you have described and we reassure you that we are working hard to resolve these issues as quickly as possible.

We are very confident that in the end the voluntary groups will have a home to be proud of and one which many other charities operating outside our borough will be envious of.

We have also paid compensation to the lessee of Palingswick House which will be reinvested in voluntary and charity groups in H&F making this transition easier and helping secure a strong future for our charity sector.

Despite the very harsh times in which we live, this council is entitled to be proud of the way we support charities and voluntary organisations serving our borough.

Even taking into account the need to make savings, the council has worked hard to protect the voluntary and charity sector which is why we have one of the most generous grants budgets in London at £3.9million per annum.

As nice as Edward Wood appears to be on the surface of things, I understood from a new tenant that the water and toilets are not connected as yet. No toilets is not state of the art I'm sorry! Boxmoor offices are still, after two years of promises not yet available. Mold and damp have complicated and delaying the refurbishment, indefinitely. Let's get the facts correct please.
Furthermore, two major charities involving buses and vans were not eligible to have offices due to limitations on the size of vehicles allowed on the estate for health and safety regulations. So in my opinion, Edward Wood Charity hub is a not a reality but continues to be hyped as propoganda, with no real truth.
