Morris dancers cross staves

Tuesday May 5, 2009

Stick bashing and handkerchief waving may not be top of the agenda on a sunny May Day but this is precisely what a group of strange looking men have been doing for half a century.

Adorned with bells and rosettes, the Hammersmith Morris Men, also known as the 'Smiffs', performed to crowds of amused bystanders on May 1 outside the William Morris pub off King Street.

The Morris dance involves groups performing synchronised dances, emphasising the moves using handkerchiefs, sticks or swords, usually accompanied by a melodeon. The English folk dance has been around for centuries and is traditionally performed on May 1 outside village pubs.

Steve Eddington, 37, said: "Most of us have taken the day off work today to come and entertain the people of Hammersmith. It's our 50th Anniversary this year and it's a big celebration for us."

The troupe, who were founded by Hugh Rippon in 1959, travel around the country to dance in folk festivals.

Mr Eddington said: "There are no competitions for teams at the moment but in August there is a jigging competition in Sidmouth for individual dancers. I've been to it once and it's great. We have high hopes for our youngest dancer though. I reckon he has the best chance of winning if we go this year."

Mr Eddington says this traditional dance should be viewed as a fun way to socialise and shed a few pounds. He admits his girlfriend was a bit dubious at first but after seeing him dance actually thought it was quite good.

After half a century the Hammersmith Morris men, are still going strong with around 20 active members.

Mr Eddington said: "It's great, there are a whole range of ages and we completely defy stereotypes especially with our youngest dancer being only 19. "We have lawyers, people from pharmaceutical companies and teachers. "It can be a bit hard on the knees but it's definitely one of the best ways to keep in shape- although we do like to go to the pub."

Dance leader Simon Wright said: "We are the world famous Morris Men and are always looking for people to join in the fun."

Anyone wishing to join the Hammersmith Morris Men can come along to one of their session held every Tuesday at 8pm at the Corinthian Sailing Club, Upper Mall, Hammersmith.
