Marcus Garvey improvements

Tuesday October 27, 2009

Swinging, jumping and climbing were just some of the activities suggested when over 500 young people discussed the future of Marcus Garvey Park recently.

The park is set for over £100,000 of improvements and the council was literally overwhelmed with ideas when they met youngsters on Thursday October 15.

Marcus Garvey Park in Hammersmith has long been earmarked by the council for development and Cabinet Member for Residents’ Services, Cllr Paul Bristow met with local mums last year to discuss ideas.

And he was on hand to brainstorm ideas for the park with children and their parents.

He said: “There was a fantastic turnout at the event and it was really wonderful to hear all of the excellent ideas that the young people came up with. We will be going away now and drawing up designs for the park so that Marcus Garvey can enter a new and exciting era. Our recent ParkLife campaign has shown everyone how much we value our beautiful parks and open spaces and this is another fine example of our commitment.”

Amongst the ideas for further consideration are removing the dog area, improving the play area for younger children and building natural and adventurous play equipment for youngsters aged eight to 13.

The council has earmarked £1 million to spend on natural and adventurous play equipment in 22 borough parks over the next 18 months. Young people will be fully involved in planning new improved areas that are challenging, fun, safe and secure .

Work at Marcus Garvey will be completed by the end of March 2010.
