Residents who have not already registered to vote in the upcoming elections need to confirm their details by April 20 if they want to make their voice heard.

All 46 Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) councillors are facing the public vote on May 6, 2010. A General Election was also called today (April 6) to coincide with the local elections on May 6.

H&F has one of the most transient populations in Britain with around 30,000 people moving into the borough and another 30,000 moving out every year. Despite this, 97 per cent of households have been registered by the council’s electoral services team – the highest response rate in inner London.

124,096 electors were registered during the annual canvas and the council’s electoral services team – which is one of only three elite ‘beacon’ teams nationwide – is working hard to register even more residents.

“The council’s electoral services team has just delivered confirmations of registration to more than 80,000 households in the borough,” says H&F Chief Executive Geoff Alltimes CBE.

“We know that many people in the borough have moved since the annual canvass so this is another opportunity for everyone who is eligible to make sure they have a vote. I would encourage anyone who wants to vote on May 6 to check the details we have sent very carefully and – if anything is wrong – get back to us by April 20 at the latest.

“5pm on April 20 is also the deadline for applications for postal votes to reach electoral services,” concludes Mr Alltimes.

Each of the borough’s 16 wards will elect up to three councillors in the May 6 poll with results filtering through on Friday afternoon.

The electoral services confirmation pack includes all the forms required for anyone who wants to register to vote, apply for a postal vote, appoint a proxy or make any other changes. If in doubt call the electoral registration hotline on 020 8753 4466 or email electoral.services@lbhf.gov.uk.
