Have your say on licensing

Wednesday August 11, 2010

Residents are being asked for their views on two licensing policies – one of which could stop lap dancing clubs opening in their street.

New licensing laws that came into effect in April have re-classified pole dancing and striptease clubs as ‘sexual entertainment venues’ to give local authorities more power to control the number of these clubs in their local area.

Old licensing laws put lap dancing clubs in the same category as pubs, bars and cafes, where residents could only object to one opening if they thought the licence would not meet the four basic licensing requirements. Those are the prevention of crime and disorder in the area, protection of children from harm, public safety and the prevention of public nuisance.

Now residents have the opportunity to oppose venues for being ‘inappropriate’ to the area, and local authorities will be able to stop clubs opening near schools or in quiet neighbourhoods. The number of venues can also be limited in particular areas.

However, this is not mandatory and will only apply where H&F Council adopts the policy and so is asking its residents for their views on the establishments.

The council is also looking at its licensing policy which gives rules and guidance about licences for pubs and clubs, restaurants and street traders, along with others. Residents have until 5 pm on August 30 to share their views on the Sex Establishment Licensing Policy and the Licensing Act Review 2010 by completing the questionnaires at www.citizenspace.com/local/lbhf/Sex_Entertainment_Licensing_Policy (opens new window) and www.citizenspace.com/local/lbhf/Licensing_Act_Review_2010 (opens new window).
