Gun confiscated

Thursday March 18, 2010

Two men have been arrested after a loaded handgun was found by police on Goldhawk Road.

The weapon was uncovered on Wednesday March 17, following a raid on a barbers shop after police received intelligence that suggested that drugs were being kept and consumed at the premises.

The gun was found concealed inside a laundry basket in a bedsit attached to the shop premises. Drugs and stolen property were also uncovered.

The raid was carried out by Hammersmith & Fulham Drugs Squad together with officers from Shepherds Bush 24/7 Safer Neighbourhoods Team - both of which are part-funded by the council.

Cllr Greg Smith, Cabinet Member for Crime and Street Scene, said: "This kind of result shows exactly why we fund the drugs squad and 24/7 safer neighbourhoods teams. We are determined to make the streets of Hammersmith & Fulham as crime free as possible and applaud the police for taking this potentially lethal weapon out of the hands of criminals. We will be continuing to spend heavily on the drugs squad and ensuring that there are more bobbies on the beat so that we can achieve more results just like this."

Detective Sergeant Simon Rogers from the Hammersmith & Fulham Police said: " This was an excellent result which shows how committed we are to tackling drugs and gun crime on Hammersmith & Fulham Borough. To remove these criminals’ firearm from the streets is particularly satisfying and rewarding."

Both men, aged 47 and 50 are currently in custody at Fulham Police Station.
