Green light for Fulham Reach

Monday September 26, 2011

An exciting scheme to breathe fresh life into the Fulham riverside has been approved by Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) Council.

On Friday, September, 23, developer St George was given the green light by the council to regenerate the Fulham Reach area by constructing 744 flats on a riverside site at Distillery Lane, together with new office space, gym, restaurants, swimming pool and a boat club.

Cllr Nick Botterill, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, said: “The committee approved this application as it believed that the development would revitalise the riverside by bringing new homes, jobs and prosperity to a part of London that has been in desperate need of regeneration for many years. We recognise that there were differing views on this scheme but ultimately, having considered the application in detail, it is our opinion that this development will improve Fulham Reach and the surrounding area."

As part of the scheme, the council has negotiated a £12m Section 106 package from St George that will be spent on improvements to the surrounding area.

Speaking after the meeting, local residents spoke of their satisfaction that the plans had been approved.

Fulham resident Paul Makaviglia, said: “I am sure that this development will improve the area. I have been living here for around seven years and that bit of land has always looked a bit scruffy. When I look at what St George have done in Putney, I am sure that this will be a real improvement.”

How long is the public walkway along the Thames going to be closed off?

"Local residents spoke of their satisfaction"...congratulations, now I know what it must be like to live in North Korea! How can you print such utter nonsense? The truth is that local residents were livid and incensed. Why don't you do something honest for once and change LBHF's motto to "Putting property developers first"

What an utterly meretricious piece of ''reporting''. Far from being warmly greeted by local residents, as this article would suggest, the scheme is seen as ''appalling'' rather than ''exciting'' and you would do better and be more honest to note that the vast majority of those attending the PAC were utterly opposed to it. Local residents have been badly let down by their elected representatives and paid officials in this instance - a sad trend in LBHF.

To have approved this planning application in the teeth of opposition from almost all residents and from local and national conservation and amenity groups (200 letters of objection, including condemnation from English Heritage) shows a total disregard for the electorate. All is not lost yet: the GLA planners have two weeks from receipt of all the papers from the Council to decide whether to block or call in this application. I urge residents to write NOW to Giles Dolphin, Head of Planning Decisions, GLA, City Hall, The Queen''s Walk, London SE1 2AA.

Can someone please point me to the web page to view the approved plans?

Will you also let people know about the way in which LBHF planning regulations were changed at the developer''s request so that they were not restricted to 6 storey blocks of flats but could build up to 9 storeys as they are now doing? Also the fact that at 744 flats this is more than ten times bigger than its neighbours and sits right in the middle of what is supposedly the Thames Conservation Area ?

Are you going to print any comments from the 140 people who attended the planning meeting who were utterly opposed to the scheme? No, thought not.
