Get composting
Thursday April 8, 2010
Gardening enthusiasts can now get their green fingers on low-cost composters thanks to a new council initiative.
The council has teamed up with Straight Plc to offer residents a compost bin from as little as £19. Wormeries and kitchen composters are also available. Composters usually sell for around £39.
Home composting is an excellent way to reduce the amount of garden and food waste that is thrown in the bin and sent to landfill.
When this waste rots in landfill it produces a powerful greenhouse gas (methane) that causes climate change. Composting at home stops this happening because, unlike landfill, air can reach your food and garden waste as it breaks down.
You will also be rewarded with a free supply of compost that is great for the garden.
Lyn Carpenter, Director of Resident’s Services, said: "Many of our residents are keen gardeners and it’s important that we help them to recycle the large quantities of garden waste created every year. Turning garden waste into compost is an excellent way for us to avoid paying exorbitant landfill costs.”
