Phoenix High School also continued its impressive GCSE improvement, with 93 per cent of pupils scoring five A* to C grades, up significantly from 76 per cent last year. The Shepherds Bush community school also improved the same statistic of five or more A*-C grades including English and Maths, up from 44 per cent last year to 48 per cent.

Head teacher Sir William Atkinson said: “We have done extremely well and improved on our previous best. This reflects the hard work of the students and the support they receive from their teachers.”

Aspiring engineer George Antnwi, 16, of White City, said he was delighted with his six A*, seven As and a B. “I was kind of confident beforehand and I’m always working hard,” he said. George now plans to study four A levels at William Morris Sixth Form, Hammersmith.

Meanwhile Manal Deria, 16, of Shepherds Bush, who would ultimately like to study medicine, was thrilled to receive five A* grades and 10 As. “I’m very happy – they are really good marks and I was not expecting that,” she said. “I’ve just been listening when my teachers and mum tell me to focus, and I also went to lots of extra revision classes after school.”
