GCSE results 2009: Burlington Danes
Friday August 28, 2009
Burlington Danes Academy pupils were also celebrating GCSE success, with many staying on to become the first batch of sixth formers at the newly-expanded school.
The academy, in Wood Lane, Shepherds Bush, improved on last year’s results with 63 per cent of students achieving at least five grades A* to C with 50 per cent of students achieving five or more A* to C, including Maths and English.
Head teacher Sally Coates said the school was very excited to be introducing sixth form education this year. “We’re delighted with our results, and most of our children are now staying on to do sixth form with us,” she said. “This is beneficial for them because we already know their strengths and weaknesses and they will receive a continuity of education and care.”
Harry Bryant, 16, of Shepherds Bush, was thrilled with his three A-stars, eight As and one B. “This morning I was expecting Bs and Cs, but I guess you always expect the worst!” he said. “I’m staying on here at sixth form and I’m hoping to achieve really good results in my A levels.”
Janine Nesmyth, 16, of West Kensington, was also pleasantly surprised with her five As and four Bs and will now embark on A levels at the school. “I was really freaking out beforehand, and I was crying on the bus on the way here because I didn’t think I was going to pass,” she said. “I’m excited about being in the first sixth form class and I think the teachers will pull out all the stops and give us really good support.”
Other students who performed exceptionally well were Sara Shokir with three A*s, five As and one B; Francisco Millan-Fernandez who had three A*s, three As and two Bs and Shamsa Ali with three A*s, four As and three Bs.
There were also extraordinary success stories for high achievers sitting their exams early. In one Year 10 Maths class, all 29 students gained either an A or A* GCSE a whole year earlier than usual, and Year 9 pupil Bahgah Katamesh was awarded an A* in Maths, two years ahead of schedule.
