Full steam ahead for Shepherds Bush Green

Friday June 10, 2011

It is full steam ahead with plans to redevelop Shepherds Bush Green after the Planning Inspectorate gave the green light for the council’s exciting scheme.

The news means that Hammersmith & Fulham Council can finally move ahead with plans to create two new play areas for children, plant more trees and improve routes across the Green for pedestrians and cyclists.

The verdict brings to an end several years of delays that has frustrated the council and held-up a plan to breathe fresh life into one of the borough’s most iconic open spaces.

Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for resident's services, said: "I am delighted that we can finally move ahead with this scheme which will undoubtedly benefit everyone who lives near, visits or works in and around Shepherds Bush, as well as rejuvenating a green space that needs a boost.  It is frustrating that an expensive and lengthy public hearing was deemed necessary but we now look forward to starting on this exciting scheme.”

As the Green is Common land, in order to progress with the project, the council required the consent of the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).

DEFRA called for the public hearing after a small number of people complained about the original scheme.

The hearing was held at Hammersmith Town Hall last April, with everyone in attendance in agreement that a major refurbishment of the Green was vital in order for it to fulfil its potential.

Planning Inspector Barney Grimshaw approved the plans but told the council that they would not be able to go ahead with building a café on the Green or construct a mound of earth in the south west corner.

I''m looking forward to the Shepherd''s Bush Green redevelopment, but I''m concerned about it''s subsequent maintenance. Sadly many people feel it is acceptable to leave their rubbish and takeaway food remains, which attracts rats and other vermin.

Growing up in and around Shepherds Bush my whole 20 years of life - The Green definitely needs a re-vamp, its a shame about the cafe being declined as that would''ve been a lovely vocal point - do you have any other plans or tricks up your sleeves to put in place of a cafe?

Really pleased to hear that the "Bush" in the Green will be maintained in a much safer eco-environment. We need to embellish this.

Great news, finally the potential of this site might be realised. Real disappointment though that there will be no cafe or other focal point. The cafe would have provided a community spot, light refreshments and toilets all of which would have been practical benefits.

Also hope there is going to be some more and better planting to bring some colour onto the ''Green'' - and agree with the previous poster the shops need uplifting and reigning in as they seem to encroach more and more onto the ever decreasing pavement space!

It will be great to see the Green ''done up''. I agree that the cafe and mound were a bad idea. Lets hope the ''New Green'' will be kept cleaner. I never fails to amaze me how much mess visitors leave on the Green, despite extra binbags being tied to railings. Certainly need new play areas. with safety gates that work.

Excellent news. I remember the Green as a child growing up and found recently that it was looking a little dilapidated. I hope the changes will be for the better! Also please see what can be done about the shops along the Green, they are looking rather tardy!!
