Free composting advice

Thursday October 1, 2009

After the big home composter giveaway, green-fingered enthusiasts can now get expert advice on how to get the most from their new piece of gardening kit.

H&F made 3,000 free home composters available in February. As a result, the council has now arranged a special home composting workshop on Saturday October 24, where residents will be able to talk to composting experts from the Waste Resource Action Programme (WRAP), take part in interactive composting games and watch demonstrations of composting methods.

These workshops will take place from 11am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm at Ravenscourt Community Greenhouses, located behind the cafe in Ravenscourt Park. Booking is essential for this workshop so reserve your place by calling 020 8753 1888 or emailing hannah.sills@lbhf.gov.uk.

In addition, by way of popular demand, special composting stalls will return to the borough this autumn and winter.

Trained composting advisors from the council and WRAP and will be on hand to answer questions, at Lyric Square, Hammersmith, from 10am to 3pm on the following dates:

  • Thursday November 5
  • Thursday  December 17
  • Thursday January 7
  • Thursday February 4
  • Thursday March 4

These workshops will also promote the Love Food Hate Waste campaign that encourages residents to minimise food waste.

Cllr Greg Smith, Cabinet Member for Crime and Street Scene, said: "These sessions will enable residents to learn how to get the best from their composter. It makes great ecological sense for garden owners to recycle their own garden waste so it is vital that residents have the best possible support and advice to do so."
