Former councillor and mayoress, Dorothy Banfield – known to all as Doris – died last week on Tuesday, April 26.

Doris was mayoress in 1952-53 when her husband, Frank, was mayor of Fulham. The park on Hammersmith Embankment was named after the mayor and is called Frank Banfield Park.

Mrs Banfield served on various committees for Health & Environment, Civic Amenities, Social Services, and those committees relating to children and the elderly. She was the council's representative for Bishop Creighton House. For many years Doris was a trustee and resident of the Lygon House Almshouses.

She was also a committed fundraising for Cancer Research UK and in June last year received a Flame of Hope Award for services to the charity.

Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham Cllr Adronie Alford, who served with Mrs Banfield as a trustee of Lygon House, said: “Mrs Banfield was loved and respected by the trustees and residents of Lygon House. She was a long serving member of the community who cared deeply about the borough’s residents and gave her all to public service.”

Doris was a true Fulham stalwart and a wonderful friend and neighbour. The Banfield family and Hugh Duff served this community so well and for so many years. Their name lives on in the Park round the corner from their old house.

A very sad loss. She was a great woman committed to public service working hard for the area, for vulnerable groups of society and for charity. Hopefully she can be an example to others, RIP.
