E-learning launched

Mayor Cllr Frances Stainton opens the E-learning Centre

A new way of learning has been launched at Shepherds Bush Library, giving access to more than 10,000 courses.

The e-learning system lets anyone study at home, at the library or even on a laptop in a café to gain qualifications to help them find work.

It was launched with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the library at Westfield shopping centre by Hammersmith & Fulham mayor Cllr Frances Stainton, who made a short speech welcoming the initiative.

She was given a guided tour by staff of the Acton Training Centre (ATC), which launched the E-learning Centre in partnership with the library’s recruitment service Work Zone.

David Martell, ATC operations manager, said the flexible self-learning system was backed by advice from a tutor based at the Shepherds Bush Library building.

“There are thousands of courses people can do by themselves, to help them get a job, gain promotion or continue in work,” he said. “It gives everyone the freedom to access learning whenever they want. The aim is to remove barriers from learning and help people achieve their goals.”

Students have an initial meeting with the library-based tutor to assess which course suits them best, with more than 10,000 options available.

E-learning complements the efforts of Work Zone, a partnership project established by H&F Council on the first floor of the library in Wood Lane, set up to help Westfield’s retailers recruit locally.

E-learning has a high satisfaction level among students, who can tailor study hours to suit. Students on e-learning courses have a 98 per cent satisfaction rating.

The ribbon-cutting took place at the Shepherds Bush Library in Wood Lane, Shepherds Bush, on Friday September 30.
