E-learning launch

Wednesday September 28, 2011

A new way of learning is being pioneered at Shepherds Bush Library, allowing anyone to gain qualifications to help find work.

E-learning launches at the library at Westfield shopping centre this Friday (September 30), giving access to 10,000 different e-learning courses. Studying can be done at home, at the library - even on a laptop in a cafe - to achieve qualifications at a pace to suit each individual.

Acton Training Centre (ATC) is launching the E-learning Centre in partnership with the library’s recruitment service Work Zone, with Hammersmith & Fulham (H&F) Mayor Cllr  Frances Stainton performing the opening on Friday morning.

David Martell, ATC operations manager, said the flexible self-learning system was backed by advice from a tutor who is based at the Shepherds Bush Library building.

“There are thousands of courses people can do by themselves, to help them get a job, gain promotion or continue in work,” he said. “It gives everyone the freedom to access learning whenever they want. The aim is to remove barriers from learning and help people achieve their goals.”

At an initial meeting with the library-based tutor, e-learning students will assess which course is right. There are currently 800 e-learning courses, but there is also access to more than 10,000 further courses.

The e-learning courses will complement the efforts of Work Zone, a partnership project established by H&F Council on the first floor of the library in Wood Lane, set up to help Westfield’s 265 retailers recruit locally, and assist residents to find work via skills training.

E-learning has a high satisfaction level among students, who can tailor study hours to suit. Students on e-learning courses have a 98 per cent satisfaction rating.

The new E-learning Centre will be officially opened at Shepherds Bush Library, 6 Wood Lane, Shepherds Bush, W12 7BF, at 10am on Friday September 30. The ceremony will be performed by the Mayor of H&F Cllr Frances Stainton.
