Debut for Sports Awards
Tuesday July 13, 2010
BBC sports presenter John Inverdale was the host for the borough's first ever Community Sports Awards.
The event, held in the Champions Club Suite at Chelsea FC on Thursday July 8 celebrated the many great sporting achievements happening all over Hammersmith & Fulham.
The event also featured an inspirational talk from six times World Champion and twice Olympian canoeist Anna Hemmings and breathtaking performances from the coaches of Hammersmith Gymnastics Club and members of Scorpion Kickboxing Club.
Several local athletes, volunteers, clubs and coaches were recognised, with the Outstanding Contribution to Sport' award presented to Len Toulson from White City Youth Football Club who has been coaching football for over 40 years in the White City community. When Len was questioned by John Inverdale why he continues to coach, Len emotionally said, 'Because I love the kids'.
Grace Smith, an eight year-old taekwondo black belt walked away with the Junior Athlete of the Year and 14 year-old Henry Compton School pupil Scott Allen won Junior Volunteer of the Year after clocking up 100 hours of volunteering with the school's PE department.
Cllr Greg Smith, Cabinet Member for Residents' Services, said: "H&F was recently recognised by Sport England as London's sportiest borough and judging by the amount of talent on show tonight it is easy to see why. I would like to thank everyone involved in nominating, attending, presenting and sponsoring the awards and making it such a special occasion."
