Borough trials for Lords mission

Thursday January 12, 2012

Boys in Hammersmith & Fulham with an interest in cricket are being urged to help the borough team earn an appearance at Lord’s Cricket Ground in the coming weeks.

Trials for the borough’s London Youth Games indoor cricket team will take place at the Hammersmith Academy on Cathnor Road on Friday 20 January at 4.30-6.30pm.

The trials are open to boys in Year 8 or under who live or go to school in Hammersmith & Fulham. The successful trialists will be invited to special squad training sessions at the same venue on the following four Fridays.

From there, a team will go on to represent Hammersmith & Fulham at the Balfour Beatty London Youth Games boys’ indoor cricket qualifiers at Harrow Leisure Centre on 25/26 February against borough teams from right across London.

The eight qualifiers will progress to the finals which take place at the plush Lord’s Indoor Cricket School on 11 March, where the winners will be crowned.  The current Surrey County Cricket Captain Rory Hamilton-Brown took part in the London Youth Games indoor cricket competition in his early competitive career.

The London Youth Games is Europe’s largest annual youth sports event and features 80 competitions in 30 sports including teams from all 33 London boroughs.

For further information or to confirm attendance at the trials, please contact Hammersmith & Fulham Sports Development Team on 0208 753 6458 or email the Hammersmith & Fulham Boys’ Cricket Team Manager Larry Culhane at larry_culhane@phoenix.lbhf.sch.uk.

Agree with Amy, this is a good thing and as a keen cricketer nothing would be better than the chance to play at Lord's. But it's important to give the same chances to girls and boys and build on the fact we're lucky in H&F that we have many good schools with lots of young people keen to play sport. This sounds a great opportunity and hope H&F's team will get to Lord's.

What about girls interested in cricket in Hammersmith & Fulham? The England women's cricket team is the best in the world and are the current holders of the Ashes. Many girls are keen cricket players and would like to be offered the same chances to play in an event such as that which this article alludes to for boys.

Hammersmith & Fulham is also home to a number of outstanding girls' schools with countless excellent young sportswomen. There should be initiatives promoted on the Council's website to encourage them and nurture their talents; what a shame to see the Local Authority in an area with so many high achieving young women encouraging only boys to play sport.

Best of luck to these boys and I hope the Hammersmith & Fulham team emerges victorious. I also hope we will see girls being given the same opportunities to play for the borough.
