Better market planned

Wednesday December 2, 2009

Moves to improve Shepherds Bush Market have been announced.

H&F Council bosses are asking local residents, traders and businesses what they think about a possible regeneration of the market area as a way of protecting its status as one of west London's leading destinations.

The council and the other landowners, including housing association Peabody Trust and the homeless charity Broadway Centre, are working together on the preliminary plans to review the layout of the market within an expanded are which also includes new shops and restaurants.

In the plans, the Transport for London-owned market area would be enlarged eastwards to take in a former laundry site in Pennard Road, along with land currently owned by the Broadway Centre and Peabody Trust.

A new entrance to the market would also be created in Goldhawk Road.

H&F cabinet member Mark Loveday said: "Shepherds Bush Market has been the heart of the area for nearly 100 years. The market currently sits on a very cramped site which stops major improvements. Now we have a great opportunity to secure the future of the market and to breathe new economic life into the whole area.

"We really want to hear from local residents, businesses and traders before we settle on any detailed proposals.

"We want to ensure that Shepherds Bush Market remains a cultural icon for London."

Stephen Howlett, chief executive of Peabody Trust, said: "Shepherds Bush Market is a diverse, vibrant part of the area and any expansion - which must also protect the interests of existing residents - can only be a good thing."

Meanwhile, Howard Sinclair, the chief executive of the Broadway Centre, said: "We very much welcome being involved at this stage in these plans which are about regenerating Shepherds Bush. If the plans prove popular, we will be working with the council to ensure that the Broadway Centre continues to provide services."

H&F Council is conducting a survey of residents, businesses and traders as part of a six-week preliminary consultation on the planning brief which launches next week.

Drop-in sessions where you can have your say and find out more details are also being held at the old Shepherds Bush Library, Uxbridge Road, at the following times:
