Become a recycling champion

Monday September 21, 2009

Passionate about recycling? Always nagging your friends and neighbours to recycle more? Then why not become a recycling champion?

The council is on the lookout for estate residents who are willing to promote the benefits of recycling to their fellow neighbours.

No experience is necessary and anyone can become a recycling champion. You just need to believe that recycling is important and be willing to promote it to others.

The council spends millions of pounds each year sending waste to landfill and landfill rates have almost doubled in the last two years. You can help the council avoid paying these onerous taxes by recycling as much as possible. And the less waste sent to landfill, the easier it is for the council to continue to keep council tax low.

In fact, a one per cent reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill equates to a saving to the council of almost £14,000.

Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for crime and street scene, said: "I would like to urge as many estate residents as possible to volunteer to become recycling champions. If we all club together, there is no reason why we cannot increase our recycling rates, which in turn helps us to keen our council tax down. Recycling is such an easy habit to get into so why not start today?”

A special recycling champion training session will take place from 2pm to 3pm on Thursday October 8 at the White City Community Centre, India Way, adjacent to New Zealand Way, White City, W12 7QT. Alternatively contact Stephanie Ward on 020 7549 0305 or stephanie@wastewatch.org.uk.
