Awards for school pupils

Thursday February 2, 2012

49 school children from Hammersmith & Fulham were presented with awards at Kensington Town Hall recently (Monday January 23).

The pupils received prestigious Jack Petchey Achievement Awards after being nominated by their peers and leaders.

Honours were presented for a variety of reasons but mainly in recognition of the youngsters doing their best.

Winners received medallions to go with their framed certificate and a cheque for £200 for their schools. Prize money has mainly been spent on extra resources and equipment.

The awards scheme provides funding of £24,400 each year to schools in Hammersmith & Fulham and £246,500 has been awarded to youth organisation in the borough since funding began in 2005.

Award recipients included Ahmed Noori, aged 12, from Henry Compton Boy’s School in Fulham. He won his award for his involvement with the school’s peer mentor programme. Ahmed supports new pupils who join the school part of the way into the school year.

The grant award has been used to purchase decorating materials, paint and wall display materials, posters and prints, which were used to decorate the peer mentoring room.

The event was presented by the Mayor of Hammersmith & Fulham, Cllr Frances Stainton. She said: “I was delighted to attend this event and to present so many young people with their awards. It is wonderful to see just how many young people are having such a positive impact on their schools and communities. Jack Petchey is a wonderful inspiration to them all.”

Cllr Helen Binmore, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “I would like to thank the Jack Petchey Foundation for continuing to support the borough’s schools and youth organisations. We have a lot of talent here in H&F and I am delighted that so many of our children have been honoured with an award at this years event.”
