Many young people at William Morris Sixth Form, in St Dunstans Road, were heaving a sigh of relief after their hard work was repaid with excellent results.

Among those with smiles on their faces was Emma Wilson-Black, 18, who achieved four A* grades in English, history, philosophy and sociology. She has gained a place at Oxford’s Mansfield College to read English this autumn.

Emma, a resident of Trellick Tower near Ladbroke Grove, said she had kept up a relentless pace of hard work and abandoned any attempt at a social life.

She spoke of her nervous hopes on the way to pick up her results. “I thought I would have to do another year, end up flipping burgers or, at the very least, not get my first choice of university,” she said. “This is way above what I expected.”

Emma said that she was looking forward to more hard work at university, to meeting new people and that she would like to be a journalist or a teacher one day. “My main aim is to write a novel though,” she added.

Head teacher Kevin Gilmartin was proud the school had maintained a 90 per cent A-E pass rate, even with the new A* grade. “Our results are identical to last year, which were the best ever, and we’re sending our first student to Oxford to study an arts subject,” he said.

“I’ve been walking around with a tear in my eye all morning. We’re privileged to have taught these students.”

Also at the school was H&F cabinet member Helen Binmore. “The students have done brilliantly well and the school should be pleased with its achievements,” she said.

At Ealing, Hammersmith & West London College, in Gliddon Road, students were also celebrating success. Rachel Nathaniel, 18, from Fulham, received a B in media studies, a B in sociology and D for English and will go to Greenwich University to read media studies. She hopes to review films for a career.

“I was nervous on the way here this morning but I’m satisfied with my results and my parents are really happy for me,” she said.

Principal Paula Whittle said the college had achieved a 96 per cent pass rate and increased A-C grades by 7.5 per cent.
