General information

Athletics track events range from the explosive 100 metre sprint to long distance running of 5,000 metres and above, whilst field events cover throwing and jumping events.

Jogging and running is fun, free and a quick way to get fit. It is very good for your stamina, but not so good for suppleness or upper body strength. There is some risk of over-use injury to feet, knees, ankles and hips. But if you do not overdo it at first, wear a good pair of running shoes and run on soft surfaces like grass you should not have any serious problems. People with arthritis in the legs, hips or back or who are overweight should try cycling or swimming instead. You do not have to jog on your own as there are many clubs you can join.
