Community Sport Physical Activity Network

Details of CSPAN's aims and goals

The Hammersmith & Fulham's Community Sport Physical Activity Network (CSPAN) is chaired by Chris Bunting, Community Sports Manager for Hammersmith & Fulham Council.

H&F's CSPAN includes members from Hammersmith & Fulham Council, H&F Primary Care Trust, disability groups, leisure providers, police, planning, regeneration, professional sports clubs, voluntary sports clubs and organisations, school sports partnership, Pro-Active West London, Building Schools for the Future, youth services, children's services, MIND, Well London and community groups.

The group's mission statement is to provide a strategic alliance of partners in the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham who contribute to the health, well being and prosperity of local people through increasing participation in sport, physical activity and physical education.

The group's key aim is to oversee and coordinate the planning, development, implementation, monitoring, promotion and evaluation of sport and physical activity development across the London Borough of Hammersmith & Fulham for the benefit of the borough’s residents, employees and pupils, recognising the input and needs of all partners involved.

Using local data on participation, obesity and deprivation, the H&F CSPAN have identified following priority areas of work;

  • Improve the health and well being of the population by increasing numbers of people taking part in sport and physical activity by 1% year on year.
  • Widen access to opportunities for sport and physical activity – and to increase the number of children accessing sport and physical activity outside school.
  • Bring together and aligning partners existing priorities and targets within one joined up local action plan based upon the needs of local communities and ensuring clarity in roles and responsibilities.
  • Increase the numbers of volunteers and apprentices involved in sport and physical activity by 5% - line with the timescales set out in the LBHF Sport and Physical Activity Strategy.
  • Inclusive and active sign up.
  • Influence local development framework mechanism.
  • Develop the 2012 Games legacy.
  • Aim to ensure that all facilities achieve IFI.
  • To maximise community access to BSF facilities (working with the local education partnership).
  • Active transport.

The H&F CSPAN currently oversees 4 sub-groups covering the following areas, disability, Sports Clubs Forum, Health and Wellbeing and Resources. In addition, 4 project groups have been set up to review Youth and Street Games, Football in the Community, Extended Services and the 2012 Games and Paralympics.

Draft Hammersmith and Fulham CSPAN Strategy

This strategy has been prepared by the Hammersmith and Fulham CSPAN, a strategic partnership committed to the development and improvement of sport and physical activity borough wide. CSPAN is one of 33 Community Sport and Physical Activity Networks in London. It shares a common purpose with many others across England – to increase participation in sport and physical activity and to encourage people to lead healthier lifestyles.

Taking part in sport and physical activity can bring communities together, promote health and wellbeing and inspire others to get moving. Public spaces can be made more colourful, vibrant and appealing through people playing sport, exercising and having fun together. Also, the sport and leisure sector plays a crucial role in the local economy and its facilities are important building blocks for regeneration and place shaping. We want to maximise the impact that sport and physical activity has in Hammersmith and Fulham by working collaboratively, ambitiously and determinedly towards clear, defined and inspiring goals.
