Children's social workers - Success in Hammersmith & Fulham

Hammersmith & Fulham has a dynamic and wonderfully diverse community offering challenges but also rich rewards.

ChildrenChildren and families living in the borough come from all over the world and from a variety of backgrounds. Between them they speak over ninety seven different languages.

  • Hammersmith & Fulham’s children and young people’s plan which sets out priorities, outcomes and achievements to date in relation to the five ‘Every Child Matters’ outcomes.
  • In Hammersmith & Fulham there is a strong commitment to addressing the needs of children and young people who are affected by domestic violence. There are a number of voluntary sector agencies with whom we are working in partnership to develop services for families.
  • Hammersmith & Fulham has seen a significant reduction in teenage pregnancies. There have been fewer children on the child protection register, fewer in care, and those who are, enjoying greater stability. Fewer young people have been committing offences.
  • The Common Assessment Framework is being piloted in the north of the borough in White City. This project will be evaluated and rolled out across the borough by 2008.
  • Education of care leavers is improving. In 2004/05 15% achieved five GCSEs A*-C and 49% of care leavers aged 19 were in employment, education and training.
  • A group of young people from Hammersmith & Fulham meet with local councillors quarterly where they can raise with them their experiences of being looked after.
