About our borough
Though geographically small compared to most other London boroughs, Hammersmith & Fulham has plenty packed into it.
On top of the usual excellent communications, road, tube and bus, the borough has many features that are uniquely its own. All links below to external websites open in new windows.
Sport
It is the only London borough with three professional football clubs: Chelsea, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers.
It is also the only London borough which stages polo matches and is also home to the pre-Wimbledon tennis tournament at Queens Club every June.
The annual University boat race winds along the Thames from Fulham and up and under Hammersmith Bridge.
And there is plenty to do for staff wanting to participate in active lifestyles with lots of local sports clubs and acres of sports pitches and open spaces.
Culture
Culturally the borough can also boast three small but very influential theatres.
The Lyric in Hammersmith has been strutting its stuff since 1895. Originally built as a mini opera house by celebrated theatre architect Frank Matcham the doors closed in 1966. But after a public outcry the original Lyric was rebuilt piece by piece inside its current location above the new shopping centre and reopened in 1979: www.lyric.co.uk.
The Bush Theatre, located with geographical logic in Shepherds Bush, also has a reputation for breaking new talent - Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh packed out the theatre in a record run in the mid 90s and Victoria Wood got her first breaks upstairs at the Bush. Born in 1972 the theatre has provided the first stage for burgeoning talent like Bob Hoskins and France Barber and playwrights like Terry Johnson: www.bush.co.uk.
Finally the Riverside Studios offers a multi-media experience, with a cinema, theatre and exhibition space and much more besides the riverside: www.riversidestudios.co.uk.
The Hammersmith Apollo (formerly the Odeon) is one of London's top venues for bands, comedians and the occasional musical. Riverdance spent what seemed an eternity there and some of this year's highlights include can be seen on the venue's website.
The Empire in Shepherds Bush also hosts a variety of musical artists and styles: www.o2shepherdsbushempire.co.uk.
Shopping
In the north of the borough is Westfield, the largest inner city shopping mall in the country and just across the road from the BBC TV Centre. There is more quirky local shopping around Shepherds Bush Green, King Street in Hammersmith and along the Fulham Road and New Kings Road.
In short Hammermith & Fulham makes up a substantial slice of the London pizza. There are great riverside walks and places to stop for a drink or a bite and a great mix of people to meet along the way. Go and explore, we've probably left the best bits out.
