Private housing services

The Private Housing Service is here to ensure safe and healthy homes for all private residents in the borough. If you are a freeholder, leaseholder, homeowner, landlord, private or housing association tenant, we seek to improve and maintain housing standards through providing you with a range of services, including:

  • Advice on minimum standards of accommodation
  • Taking action to deal with unsafe housing conditions

We visit people in their homes and generally assess for hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) (pdf 450KB).

  • Advice and assistance to bring empty properties back to use

We provide a service to members of the public who want to see action taken to bring privately owned properties back into use as well as offering owners advice, assistance, grants and lettings schemes.

Improving housing standards in Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs). We  take a proactive approach to ensure that conditions in houses in multiple occupation are up to standard, through carrying out safety inspections.

  • Help with improvements to your property such as adaptations for disabled people and keeping your home warm at an affordable cost
  • Improving housing standards
  • Grants and loans to improve your home

For urgent repairs, heating, insulation and security works and adaptations for disabled persons, Home Link improvement agency can help with your grant application.
