Housing green pages
Heard about the greenhouse effect? - now hear about how to green your home
More people now see the need to look at how they can make their homes more green through reducing waste, recycling and becoming energy efficient.
Why be green?
Having an energy efficient home and reducing waste means that you, or your tenants, cause:
- less damage to the environment and
- have cheaper energy bills.
The burning of fossil fuels releases harmful greenhouse gases, especially carbon dioxide (CO2), into the atmosphere, causing damage and climate change. Such as more extreme weather events like strong winds and flooding.
More than a quarter of our annual CO2 emissions come from energy we use in our home.
The amount of rubbish thrown away in London everyday would fill Trafalgar Square up to the top of Nelson’s Column or fill dustbins stretching from the Earth to the Moon.
Most of London’s waste is thrown into landfill sites (holes in the ground) at the mouth of the Thames.
By being energy efficient and reducing waste, you can:
- save energy
- reduce your contribution to climate change
- increase the comfort of your home
- save yourself money.
