Housing green pages - reducing waste

We all need to do our bit to reduce waste and recycle more, and make better use of resources.

We are consuming at an unsustainable rate and contributing to climate change. Most of our waste ends up in landfill, where biodegradable waste generates methane - a powerful greenhouse gas. Valuable energy is used to make new products which are later disposed of also contributing to climate change.

The facts

  • The amount of rubbish thrown away in London everyday would fill Trafalgar Square up to the top of Nelson’s Column.
  • Most of London’s waste is thrown into landfill sites (holes in the ground) at the mouth of the Thames. These landfill sites are due to be full in 2008.
  • In one year there would be enough waste to fill dustbins stretching from the Earth to the Moon.
  • The link below shows how waste is being tackled by this borough and provides information about the recycling, composting and waste reduction services we provide, together with headline statistics and key contacts.
