Mentoring project
What are the aims of the mentoring project?
The aims of the project are to:
- Work positively with young people aged 10 – 18 who are involved in offending behaviour, social and/or school inclusion, and may be at risk of being accommodated by the local authority
- Provide a skilled and trained volunteer to support young people through the duration of the mentoring relationship, which can be for up to one year.
- To provide individual support through the mentor and other project staff, to address a young person’s needs. divert young people from re-offending through the one to one mentoring relationship, and through offering a range of training workshops
- Work with other professional agencies to help a young person to stay in their family home
- Develop a coping strategy for young people who are experiencing difficulties at school
What is a mentor?
- Someone who is prepared to support a young person for up to one year
- Someone who will help a young person examine what they would like to achieve while they are on the mentoring project. They will also be prepared to motivate the young person to work towards the goals they have set themselves
- A volunteer who agrees to work within the guidelines and policies of the mentoring project
What skills and attributes does a volunteer need?
- You must be aged 20 or over. a positive, non-judgmental attitude towards young people who are ‘at risk’
- Good communication and listening skills an ability to help build a young person’s skills via education, employment, and personal goal setting
- Able to commit to the project for a minimum of 6 months and be able to meet with the young person once a week
What support is provided for volunteers?
- Training programme
- Monthly support meetings
- Expenses paid
- Regular contact with the co-ordinator
- Possibility in engaging in other voluntary work
