Youth offending (YOS)
What does the Youth Offending Service do?
The main purpose of the YOS is to reduce offending by children and young people.
The statutory part of the service works with children and young people aged from 10 to 18 years, who come to the attention of the police and courts because they have been involved in crime.
The preventative part of the service aims to stop young people offending and becoming involved in the criminal justice system.
The service provides a range of services to help and support young people, and their families, to try to stop them from becoming any further involved in crime and anti-social behaviour.
Who are the workers in the service?
The YOS includes workers from its partner agencies, Children's Services, Health, Police and Probation and Connexions. There are substance misuse workers and a mental health nurse who can offer advice and support on emotional and mental health issues to young people and their carers.
What happens when you are referred to the Youth Offending Service?
Each young person who comes to the attention of the service, will be assessed to decide the risk of them re-offending or hurting others. This assessment is to help plan how to work with the young person, and their family, to reduce any risk and promote the young person's development and well-being.
How does the service work?
We aim to:
- give a fast response to help young people who have offended or are at risk of offending.
- encourage young people to make amends to the victim.
- develop activities and increase opportunities for young people to help them stop committing crime.
- help the young person and their family take responsibility for what has happened.
