The Independent Visitor Scheme
An Independent Visitor is a befriender, who visits the child or young person generally at least once a month.
The Scheme has been set up to provide a service for children and young people who are looked after by Hammersmith & Fulham and has little or no contact with their birth family can have an Independent Visitor.
The Independent Visitor is someone that the young person hopefully will build a trusting relationship with. An Independent Visitor will also make time to visit children and young people and there is also scope to arrange an activity out. The child/young person can also ask his/her Independent Visitor to support them at their review meetings if they wish.
The guidance underpinning the Independent Visitors is set out in the Children Act 1989. Paragraph 17 of Schedule 2 to the Children Act 1989 outlines the role and function of the Independent Visitor.
“…places also the duty of the local authority to appoint an Independent Visitor, if that would be in the child’s best interest and if certain condition are satisfied.”
If you know a child or young person who would benefit from an Independent Visitor or if you want to give some time and volunteer yourself as an Independent Visitor please contact Christine Whisker at the Independent Visitor Scheme or speak to a social worker from Hammersmith & Fulham.
