Occupational therapy
We work with people who cannot do things unaided, such as getting dressed, taking a shower, going up stairs and other everyday activities.
We promote services with the aim of enabling residents to achieve a maximum level of independence and to remain at home.
How can occupational therapists help?
An occupational therapist will help you adapt to changes in your everyday life and to overcome practical problems.
Occupational therapists have specialist knowledge and can advise you on disability equipment and adaptions to housing, aids to daily living, and adaptations to the workplace.
What services can we offer?
- advising you on overcoming the practical difficulties caused by illness or disability
- teaching you to look at new ways of doing things
- helping you build confidence in your physical abilities
- offering intensive short term focussed support, known as reablement
- prescribe simpe aids for daily living that you can get from local accredited pharmacies
- providing you with specialist equipment to help you with activities such as getting in and out of the bath or on and off the toilet
- organising minor alterations to your home such as installing grab or stair rails to help you get around safely
- arranging major works such as installing a stair lift or ramp.
Who we help
We provide services for people aged 18 years or over and who are:
- a resident in Hammersmith & Fulham and
- have a long term disability or
- have a permanent disability or
- long term illness or impairment that causes significant long term problems on their ability to carry out everyday activities.
Children under 18 who have a disability may also be eligible for help from occupational therapists within the Children with Disabilities Team.
How can I get occupational therapy services?
Before we can arrange services for you, you will need to complete an assessment.
Basic details will need to be gathered over the telephone. You may be eligible to complete a self assessment, otherwise an appointed officer will visit you at home.
Together, with the reablement service, we will identify your needs and how you will manage daily living tasks at home in order to work out which services may help you.
How do I apply?
A referral to the occupational therapy service can be made by you, a friend or relative, a voluntary organisation, the hospital or your doctor.

Are these services free?
There is no charge for your assessment or the advice we give you. Some specialist equipment you need is given to you as a long term loan. It remains the property of the council but it is yours to use for as long as you need it.
For minor alterations to your home or major works there may be charges which we will discuss with you.
