Hammersmith & Fulham Children's Fund
The Children's Fund uses money provided by the government to deliver support to children aged 5 - 13 who need extra help to achieve their potential. This support can be for children's health, home life, education or what they do in their free time. The different activities are based on themes set out by the government to improve outcomes for children.
Helping children to be healthy
We want to help families and children to have healthy lifestyles. We fund three projects supporting families in the north of the borough to be healthy: Old Oak Community Centre provides after-school activities and family celebartion events; ADVANCE advocacy supports families experiencing domestic violence; The African Child runs parenting workships and promotes access to education, health and housing services. We also support the Young carers project which runs after-school clubs and holiday activities for children who are carers.
Helping children to stay safe
We want to support children to stay safe and keep out of trouble by providing safe, fun places for them to be when they're not at school. We fund a number of activities that focus on children where this care is really needed. Summer activities are run at Hestia Women's Aid & Shepherds Bush Families Project, Sands End Adventure Playground, Junior Youth on White City and Edward Woods Community Centre and The Masbro Centre. We also fund Holiday Fun mobile play provision that goes around local estates where there are limited or no play facilities.
Helping children to enjoy and achieve
We want children to achieve their full potential and enjoy learning and playing. We are funding Learning Mentors in Pope John and Avonmore primary schools who help children and young people to reach their full potential at school. We work with Art Therapists at Wendell Park Primary School and Wormholt Park Primary School through the Open Learning Project.
We also support supplementary learning at the Somali Women's Support and Development Group, Somalia Integrated Relief Organisation (SIROAID) & Kurdish Association New Generations Abroad.
We support a project, based at Hammersmith & Fulham Action on Disability (HAFAD), that supports disabled children from primary to secondary school. We also work with the council's Childcare, Learning and Play Department through a Play Outreach Worker, to support disabled children in accessing mainstream play provision.
Helping children to make a positive contribution
We want to help children to increase in confidence in order to deal with the significant challenges that life presents them. We want to help those who are offending to stop offending and to learn the difference between acceptable and non-acceptable behaviour. We run a project with the local Youth Offending Service called the Early Intervention Project which aims to do just that.
We also fund the Lyric Hammersmith to run projects for children to develop self-esteem and confidence and to build awareness of the importance of skills such as time-keeping, personal responsibility and self discipline.
Helping children to make a positive contribution also means that we support children to help us make decisions. We involve children and young people in designing and reviewing our services.
