Recycling - collection sites
Information on recycling sites in the borough
There are over 45 public recycling sites across the borough with Smart Banks and some with textile recycling banks.
Smart Banks
Smart Banks collect all of your recycling with no need to sort. These banks have been positioned on the public highway and also on housing estates so that residents who are not provided with Smart Sacks can recycle all their paper, card, cans, glass, aerosols, plastic bottles and food and drink cartons (e.g. Tetra Pak).
What Can I put in the Smart Bank?
You can put all the materials you put in Smart Sacks into the new Smart Banks, including:
Paper and card - newspapers, magazines, catalogues, directories - including Yellow Pages, leaflets, loose paper, card and cardboard (please flatten)
Glass- mixed glass is now collected so just place all glass bottles and jars in the Smart bank. (no lids please)
Cans, tin, aerosols and plastic bottles only - all types of food and drink cans are wanted including aerosol cans, which can be safely deposited in the Smart bank. Please remove lids from plastic bottles NO other types of plastic please
Food and drink cartons (e.g. Tetra Pak)- all paper based milk, drink and food cartons.
To help keep the banks looking smart, please take your left over bags and boxes homes. If the banks are full please don't leave recyclables around them - Let us know on 020 8753 1100. Crashing bottles are noisy, please only use banks between 9am and 8pm.

Other types of Recycling Banks
Some recycling sites have textile banks operated by Oxfam, Scope or Traid. Please use these for all clothes, curtains, linen, blankets and any other fabrics. Wearable clothes will go to charity shops and the remainder will either be reprocessed into flocking for use as a filling material for padding and felt or alternatively into cloth wipers for use in industry.
We also have a book bank where you can recycle all your old books, located at Sainsbury's supermarket in Townmead Road, Fulham, SW6.
You can now recycle your used batteries at some public buildings. Previously residents were asked to take their used dry cell battteries to the Civic Amenity site at Smugglers Way in Wandsworth. You may still take your batteries here but we have made it easier for you by installing battery recycling tubes at the following public buildings:
- Hammersmith Town Hall Reception
- Riverview House Reception
- Hammersmith Library
- Fulham Library
- Shepherd's Bush Library
- Askew Rd Library
- Baron's Court Library
- Sands End Library
The battery recycling tubes can accept only single use batteries: dry cell batteries; button batteries (watch and calculator batteries) and domestic household batteries. Please note that NO rechargeable batteries (i.e: Nickel cadmium (NiCd), Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH) and lithium batteries) should be put in the battery recycling tube. Also, we are unable to accept any Lead Acid Batteries – Industrial, motor vehicle, and computer back-up batteries.
The batteries are collected by the recycling crew and taken to Smugglers Way in Wandsworth. They are then collected and recycled by Vinton Metals. Please see their website for more information: http://www.vintonbatteries.co.uk/profile.shtml
