West Kensington, Earls Court and North Fulham
The council wants to use the potential redevelopment of Earls Court after 2012 to bring substantial benefits to the wider area, including more and better quality homes, new jobs and improved open spaces.
Currently few local people on the West Kensington estate feel that they have access to local job opportunities. Unemployment is double the borough average and the estate itself is becoming tired and will need millions of pounds spent on it in the longer term despite short term benefits of Decent Homes investment.
The council is focusing our attention on improving the environment, creating better housing - with more family-sized housing – and access to more job opportunities.
The possible redevelopment of Earls Court after 2012 could provide a fantastic catalyst to bring major long term improvements to the area. The council would like to see an International Convention Centre built within the Earls Court and Olympia complexes which, together with a new business district, would bring thousands of extra jobs and lead to major environmental and transport improvements.
The council’s preferred way forward is to:
Develop an International Convention Centre and additional offices and hotels within the Earls Court
and Olympia complexes as a major way of boosting the local economy and bringing new jobs
Redevelop West Kensington and Gibbs Green estates over the next 15-20 years. This means working with residents to look at options for improving the estates, ensuring that you and future generations benefit from better quality housing, open spaces and transport links as well as improved community links
Phase rebuilding of Clem Attlee estate within 20 years to improve the quality of housing and provide a better mix of properties, starting with the ‘Y’ blocks.
